Why Are the Cabinets Beside My Wall Oven Discolouring?

The short answer

Usually the route heat takes out of the opening, not the oven. Wolf requires two gaps to stay clear at all times: the cool air intake, which sits above the door, and the exhaust vent below it. Close either with trim or a tight reveal and the heat leaves sideways. Los Angeles Wolf Repair Pros, (310) 706-2347, reads the opening before blaming the appliance.

For the contractor

Flush inset is where it turns up most. The published minimum is an eighth of an inch of reveal on every side, with all four corners at exactly ninety degrees. Site work eats that: a deep scribe against a wall, a filler run past the opening, a casing that ends up shy of square, and the gap the intake was drawing through is half of what the drawing showed.

The cabinet fronts either side show it first because they are the nearest finished surface to an opening that is now venting where it should not. Lacquer yellows, a veneer edge lifts, a painted rail goes chalky along one line. The second contributor is a door that no longer pulls up square, which lays a steady ribbon of heat along one edge; look for marking that follows the door line rather than the vent line.

Two questions that usually follow

Can I line the cabinet with a heat shield or a strip of insulation?

That is the wrong end of the problem, and packing an opening usually blocks the very path the appliance relies on. Both gaps are specified to be clear, so the work is to open the route back up rather than to armour the cabinet against what is escaping.

Is a cooktop above the oven making it worse?

It can crowd the same opening. Wolf asks for a minimum quarter inch between the two units where a cooktop sits over an oven, and where the electrical supply lands inside the opening the cabinet may need to be deeper than the table suggests. Both decisions are taken long before anything discolours.
